Welcome, Prime Minister, Minister Strahl, ladies and gentlemen, and Kwey, kwey to my Mi’kmaq Brothers and Sisters and the elders present here today.
This is a great day for the Federation of Newfoundland Indians, a great day for the Mi’kmaq of Newfoundland, and a great day for Canada in the recognition of its Aboriginal people.
The Federation of Newfoundland Indians initiated this process nearly a decade ago. It is a process that has resulted today in the recognition of their Mikmaq ancestry, and as such, enables them to stake their rightful place in Canadian society.
What is unique about today’s announcement and our celebration of it, is that it represents perhaps one of the best and most shining examples of the power ordinary grassroots people have to effect change in their lives.
You sought my assistance and the support of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples in this endeavour. I am proud and honoured to have been able to represent your interests and advocate for you, when it was necessary, to help in bringing about this significant achievement in the life of Newfoundland's Mi'kmaq peoples.
Throughout the long and winding road of this pursuit, you have, at every turn, remained resolute in your role, and strong in your solidarity and conviction, as proud members of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples.
This afternoon, I am honoured and indeed proud to stand together in celebration with you, beside Chief Brendan Sheppard. Brendan is a man who has devoted so much of his time, passion and energy into making today a reality.
I offer my hearty congratulations to Chief Sheppard and the FNI in this day of celebration. Today, my pride for you as proud Mi'kmaq people expressing your inherent right to be recognized, knows no bounds.
The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples salutes all members of the Federation of Newfoundland Indians, offers its respect to the Mi'kmaq peoples of this great province and thanks Prime Minister Harper and the Government of Canada for making today’s historic announcement.
Thank you. Merci. Meegwetch.
