National Chief condemns Manitoba Chief’s remarks

(Ottawa - Tuesday, April 12 – The National Chief of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples has expressed dismay at a letter faxed to the Winnipeg Free Press by Chief Terrance Nelson of the Roseau River First Nation reserve in Manitoba.

“Chief Nelson’s remarks that media coverage of the trial of David Ahenakew ‘will surely cause natives to hate Jews even more then (sic) some of them do now…’ are appalling,” said Dwight Dorey.

“As National Chief, I condemn those remarks, and other comments made by Chief Nelson against Jewish people, and wish to assure Canadians that they are not at all reflective of the attitude of Aboriginal peoples in Canada toward Jews or any other race,” Chief Dorey said.

The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples is the national political organization that has advocated for the rights and needs of Aboriginal peoples living in urban, rural and remote areas throughout Canada for the past 34 years.
