Strong Women, Strong Communities
The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples
& The National Aboriginal Women’s Summit
June 20th – June 22nd Corner Brook, Newfoundland
The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples is proud to be taking part in the National Aboriginal Women’s Summit, which will be held from June 20-22, 2007 in Corner Brook, Newfoundland.
The event represents an historic opportunity to bring together Aboriginal women from across Canada to engage, discuss and forge solutions around the conference’s theme, Strong Women, Strong Communities. As the national voice of the off-reserve, non-status and Métis community, the Congress looks forward to sharing its views and expertise in respect of the challenges and opportunities before all Aboriginal women in Canada, and particularly those living off-reserve.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is hosting the summit, with the support and collaboration of Provincial government officials, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and the Native Women’s Association of Canada, as well as with other national Aboriginal organizations, the provinces and territories, and federal government departments and agencies.
Three sub-themes within the context of the Strong Women, Strong Communities theme, will guide the summit’s discussions:
- Health, Safety and Wellness;
- Equality and Empowerment;
- and, Strength, Balance and Honour
The results of the discussions and the recommendations, which are expected to flow from them, will be tabled on the last day’s plenary sessions with the Premiers and Territorial leaders, Ministers and National Aboriginal leaders.
