Lest We Forget

Congress of Aboriginal Peoples Participation in Remembrance Day Ceremonies

(Ottawa, ON - November 8, 2007) The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP) and the National Aboriginal Veterans Association (NAVA) will mark Remembrance Day by participating in ceremonies at the National War Memorial.  Patrick Brazeau, National Chief of CAP and Claude Petit, President of NAVA will be laying wreaths to honour the men and women who have fallen at War and on UN Peacekeeping operations throughout the world.

The participation of Aboriginal peoples was high in all three wars – in the two World Wars, our participation was on a large scale and the impact on Aboriginal peoples and our communities was lasting and significant.  It is important that we remember the brave Aboriginal veterans who made sacrifices to protect the freedom and quality of life that we enjoy today.

“Having served in the Canadian Armed Forces, I am proud to have served my country.  I recognize that many Aboriginal veterans feel that their role is neglected in Canadian history and consciousness.  The wartime sacrifices of our people and the suffering caused after the wars cannot be ignored.  I would like Aboriginal veterans to know that CAP and NAVA have worked very hard to honour and support Aboriginal veterans and to that end, we have asked the Government of Canada to complete the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument located in Confederation Park in Ottawa,” said National Chief Brazeau.
