The Labrador Metis Nation was formed in the late 70's by Inuit-Metis people who realized that their rights as Aboriginal Canadians were not being considered by governments in decisions being made about land use and social programs.

The Inuit-Metis of Labrador share a common ancestry with the Inuit of Labrador, but our communities have distinct histories, customs and traditions. Membership in the LMN is open to people of Native ancestry, originally from Labrador.

There are three(3) classes of members in the Labrador Metis Nation,
namely: Full members, Alliance members, Honourary members.

(a) Full members "ordinarily resident" (lived in Labrador for the past six months) are entitled to all of the rights, benefits and privileges of the Association. In order to qualify for full membership the person must be:
i) a Metis,
ii not a member of any other Aboriginal provincial
or territorial organization within Labrador,
iii). or a qualified Aboriginal member of another
Metis Aboriginal Association in another province or territory of Canada
who currently resides in Labrador.

(b) Alliance members shall be such persons who, although
they do not qualify for full membership, support the objects for which
the Association was formed or are Aboriginal people who do not meet the
definition of Metis herein.

(c) Honourary members shall be such persons as are so
elected by the full members of the Association and, although they do not
qualify for full membership in the Association, have contributed to the
furtherance of the objects of the Association.
