Brendan Sheppard is the President of the Federation of Newfoundland Indians (FNI), the Newfoundland affiliate of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP). On November 3, 2006, during elections called for by delegates at the CAP Annual General Assembly, Mr. Sheppard was nominated and acclaimed as Vice-Chief. He will serve in this capacity until the next elections, which are to occur in 2008. Brendan hails from Flat Bay, a small community on the west coast of Newfoundland in the district of St. George's. Vice-Chief Sheppard has a lengthy and distinguished history with the aboriginal movement in Newfoundland. In 1977, Brendan began working for the Federation of Newfoundland Indians as the coordinator of the recreation program. One year later he moved into the position of housing inspector with the Housing Technical Service under the auspices of the FNI. In 1989 Brendan coordinated a Child Care Needs Assessment Program for the FNI and also served as vice-president of the provincial organization for one term. Throughout his career, Mr. Sheppard has maintained a close connection with the aboriginal movement by serving as chief of the Flat Bay Indian Band Council from 1974-1986. This position provided him with the opportunity to be involved as a Director at the Board table of the Federation of Newfoundland Indians. Throughout the following years, Brendan served as a band council member on the Flat Bay Indian Band Council until being elected as president of the Federation of Newfoundland Indians in May 1994. This role gave him the opportunity to sit on the Board of Directors of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, and he has thus been involved in the governance of the Congress for over twelve years. Brendan is well respected by his colleagues and partners for his strong commitment to accountability across the Aboriginal landscape, and for his legacy of providing fair and equitable treatment for all Aboriginal people. |
