Photocopying is available on-site, subject to the approval of the archivist. All photocopying will be done by the archivist. There is a small fee for this service. A fee-based ($25.00) research service is available. Certificates are issued for $5.00 each.

Collections & Description

The Archive contains records of the Diocese of Newfoundland before the division, some going back to the early eighteenth century. It also contains records for the Eastern Diocese since the division and some of its parish records including baptismal, marriage, burial and confirmation records. Synod records, parish service records and minutes of general sessions of vestries and Synod are also available.

Collections & Description

The Diocesan Synod of Western Newfoundland Archives (DSWNA) contains records of the Western Diocese and the records of its parishes including baptismal, marriage, burial, and confirmation records. Synod records including parish service records, and minutes of general sessions of vestries and Synod are also available.

Collections & Description

The Labrador Institute Library has a large collection of Labrador material available to the public. It includes a variety of media, including photos and video. It also provides interlibrary loan service for materials at Memorial University and other university libraries. The library has an extensive collection of reports and

studies relating to northern issues, including OLABS and POLARGAS reports, Arctic bibliographies, Arctic and Northwest Territories research materials, maps and audio-visual materials. It has a collection of more than 800 photographs of people and places in Labrador from the early 1900s.

Collections & Description

Of the basic record types that are essential to all genealogical research in Canada, Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management has the following:
Transcribed copies of most church records, as well as microfilmed copies of many original church records (mostly pre-1892).
Government records including correspondence, land records and court records.
The Manuscript Section contains a wide range of business records, with particular strength in the area of mercantile records related to the Newfoundland fishery; records of individuals, with extensive holdings of journals, diaries, and correspondence; and records of non-government groups and associations.

Collections & Description

The Newfoundland and Labrador Collection comprises books, newspapers, government documents, periodicals, photographs, postcards, maps, manuscripts, diaries, microforms, pamphlets, and brochures. Many of the books in the Collection date from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Collection is the main repository for original copies of Newfoundland and Labrador newspapers.

Manuscript holdings include the papers of individuals and families and business records of Newfoundland and Labrador companies. Among the Collection’s more important manuscripts are the Sweetman and Saunders letter book, a bound volume of handwritten business letters written at Placentia between 1788 and 1804; eighteenth-century court records of Ferryland, Placentia, St. John’s and Trepassey; and Captain David Buchan’s journal, the account of his 1811 expedition in search of the Beothuks.

The Archdiocesan Archives is the main repository for the historical and contemporary documents of the Roman Catholic Church in Newfoundland. Holdings include education records, private papers, and the Wesleyana Collection donated by the late former Premier Joseph R. Smallwood. Over 100 Pastoral Charges comprise the Newfoundland and Labrador Conference and efforts are being made to consolidate their records in the Archives. These vital records date from 1794.
