Genealogical societies can offer a wealth of resources and support for researchers seeking information about their Aboriginal ancestors. Most societies have their own library collections of local publications including indexes and transcriptions of many useful records. These can help speed up the research process immensely by identifying the records you need. Once you have found you ancestor listed in an index or transcript, you can then seek out the original records to verify the accuracy of the information and gather the documentation you need to support your genealogy. You can also find many like-minded people at the meetings of genealogical societies, and learn a great deal from the newsletters and other publications sent to members.
Space restrictions do not allow for descriptions of the contents of each society’s collection; you will need to contact the relevant society yourself. This section provides contact information for societies in central and eastern Canada. If you do not live in the same region as the ancestors you are researching, you may want to join both the society for your home area and the society for your ancestor’s area.
