CAP Aboriginal Youth Portfolio and Initiatives

From its early days as the Native Council of Canada to present, the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples has long supported Aboriginal youth. In this regard, CAP recognizes the importance of youth inclusion into all aspects of its body politic. To better meet the needs and address the issues of Aboriginal youth, CAP maintains an Aboriginal youth portfolio. Through this portfolio, the voice of Aboriginal youth is bought forward and included in the national agenda. The CAP Aboriginal youth portfolio includes direct involvement with the CAP Board of Directors and CAP Affiliates, the CAP National Caucuses (Indian and Metis), CAP internal committees (such as the Health Advisory Committee), as well as any external committee’s, conferences and meetings that focus upon or impact Aboriginal youth. Additionally, the CAP Aboriginal youth portfolio supports the CAP National Youth Council and Aboriginal youth specific initiatives and projects (such as the CAP Annual Youth Achievement Awards).

Youth Communications Symposium

CAP believes that the future for Aboriginal people in Canada is a bright one. We have a strong and vibrant Aboriginal youth base to work with, and seek to include this component into the body politic of the organization in all ways possible. The CAP Youth Communications Symposium provides an opportunity for Aboriginal youth inclusion into
all aspects of CAP policy initiatives including those related to education, economic development, human rights, health, and the environment.

Held during the CAP Annual General Assembly, the Youth Communications Symposium provides Aboriginal youth informational sessions and direct communications into CAP directives, programming and activities.

Annual Youth Achievement Awards

CAP believes that recognizing people for their achievements is a great way to build self-esteem, and more importantly, it’s a way to establish role models so others can see that goals can be achieved.  Realizing how important this is for you our youth, the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples’ National Youth Council has established the CAP Annual Youth Awards highlight and play tribute to these young individuals.
